Rotary District 9111 has concluded its statutory District Training Assembly (DTA), organised for Club President Elects and other incoming officers to acculturate them with the ideals of Rotary International, mission goals and aligning their activities with the elected District Governor for a seamless fulfilment of their mission objectives in the Rotary year 2025/26.
The 2-day event which took place between Friday to Sunday April 25 to 27, 2025 at Orchid Hotel, Lekki, Lagos, was declared opened by Rotarian Dr Wole Kukoyi, the serving District Governor and was attended by elected Clubs Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, Membership Chair and Foundation Chair who would be serving in the coming Rotary year.
According to Rotarian Henry Akinyele, the District 9111 Governor-elect for the Rotary year 2025-2026 and the Convener of the training; “The training programme provides Rotary Clubs with opportunity to learn the theme and goal for the coming year, to offer motivation, inspiration and new ideas for club officers, directors and key committee chairmen of each club."
He added that several leaders of the Club and industry experts invited had spoken to share the Club's ideals, sharing experience on how to successfully fulfil set objectives, saying, “Rotary is an international service organization that brings together business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and advance goodwill and peace around the world.
"In the course of the training, we
discussed the strategic plans of the district, equipping them with various facilitations to
adequately prepare them for the roles they will play in their various Clubs next year. They now understand their roles better and of
course, we have been able to pass across the goals and activities of the district and are expected to key into it." He confidently said.
On the impact of Rotary International in the Country, Rotarian Akinyele explained that his District 9111 has 74
Clubs which are domiciled in different communities in Lagos and Ogun States executing humanitarian
projects in their different communities, including maternal health, basic education, environment, water sanitation
and hygiene and other critical areas of life, stressing that the level of impact made each year by Rotary International through its Districts and Clubs is always humongous.
In her submission on the training programme, Rotarian Omotunde Lawson, past District Governor and Chairman District 9111 Learning Committee, said, "In Rotary, there are different levels of
leaders, the District
Governor, Club Presidents and others, recognizing also that we are under
Rotary International.
"Yearly in preparation for upcoming Rotary year, series of trainings are carried out for
officers that will take over on July 1 as it is prescribed from Rotary International. However at our own
District level, our trainings are in three categories. First, we train those that we refer to as
Assistant Governors and District Committee Chairs. We also have training programme for Club Presidents' elect which was done some weeks back, these same Club Presidents are now here with their own Club officers to get their own dose of training." She affirmed.
Rotarian Deinde Shoga, a Past District Governor, who is one of the training facilitator explained that his paper on strategic planning and setting of club
goals for the year was interactive, enabling him to know clubs that already have strategic plans
with discussions geared towards how they can keep it going and improving on what they have.
He said, "But then there was a second aspect, because some Clubs do not have strategic plans, so we also looked at
what the clubs need to do, steps they need to take that will lead them from being a Club without a strategic plan to a club with strategic plans. And the fact that when you have a strategic plan, the
plan should be something that is owned by the entire Club. Everybody should believe in it and are working towards it. I also told them about tools that Rotary has provided to help them in setting their goals following them up by working at it all the time, reviewing their progress and seeing that ultimately it works for their good."
Rotarian Funke Salau, Past President and District Coordinator of the DLA Organising Committee said the training is particularly targeted at Club officers, because they will be responsible for driving the execution of Rotary projects and programmes in the communities where they are domiciled, improving their leadership skills and abilities to identify relevant projects in line with Rotary's Seven Areas of Focus.
