OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos
As part of the ongoing 'ember months' traffic safety advocacy by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency TRACE, the Ifo Divisional Command on Thursday 5, December, went on a campaign to echo the message and slogan of Cdr. Seni Ogunyemi, the TRACE Commander General and Chief Executive, on the need for road users to "speak out" against every form of traffic infractions and offence, especially those committed by Drivers and motorcycle riders.
Cdr. Adetunji Oyebola, the Divisional Commander, TRACE, Ifo Command, who led officers of the Command in the Campaign to various motor parks at ifo and environs, visiting; Papalanto-Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ibadan, Sango/Lagos garage and Ifo market, reiterated the message of their TCG/CE, Cdr. Oyebola, saying, "Safety on the Road is a collective responsibility, requiring that every road-user should lead the Vanguard of ensuring traffic rules and regulations are adhered to by all and sundry, especially drivers and motorcyclists.
In his various addresses, Cdr. Oyebola, said, "safety on our road is a collective responsibility, because the carelessness of some drivers and riders may lead to Crashes and Deaths that could directly or indirectly affect us. Drivers and riders also are enjoined to conform with appropriate speed limits while driving or riding. Drivers should keep their eyes focused on the road.
"You must avoid drunkenness while driving or riding, ensure the use of seatbelts and crash helmets, avoid overloading vehicles with passengers and stop driving against traffic." He added.
The team also complemented the campaign address with the sharing of flyers bearing the campaign messages.
Cdr. Oyebola stressed that commuters have a lot to do in ensuring the compliance of the motoring public to these traffic regulations by calling the attention of relevant traffic Managers and report excesses exhibited by drivers and riders behind the wheels.
In response to the campaign, a passenger who spoke exclusively with DAILY INDEPENDENT, agreed with the message of the rally, saying, "it's important for us passengers to expose the excesses of drivers who put many lives in danger when traveling in their commercial vehicles, ignoring advises put to them by hapless passengers."
A member of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, who spoke at the Abeokuta Garage on the condition of anonymity, said the programme could not have come at a better time than this festive season, when many drivers exhibit the desire to earn more money than usual.
According to Oyebola, "Cdr Ogunyemi, the TCG/CE, has reiterated in several forums that TRACE was established with the mandate of ensuring reduction of road traffic crashes in the state."
"He has introduced new strategies to stem the high volume of RTC and to erase the wrong perception that Ogun is the 'mortuary state', by the execution of rigorous sensitisation campaigns in motor Parks, religious homes, schools, markets, town halls, among others with full enforcement, stressing that the commanding officers had been directed to implement it with immediate effect." He added.
CDR. Oyebola called on transport stakeholders to curb drivers’ excesses leading to road traffic crashes, RTC, adding that whoever is caught flouting traffic rules would be made to face the wrath of law.
