Lagos Government Seals Ikeja GRA Restaurant For Loud Music, Infractions

OLORUNDARE ENIMOLA, Lagos.

The Lagos State Government has shut down Ile Iyan, a popular restaurant serving Nigerian dishes in Ikeja GRA, following allegations of noise pollution and other environmental violations.

The enforcement action was carried out by officials from the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) on Friday, in response to multiple complaints from local residents and nearby businesses about the restaurant’s disruptive operations.

Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure in a post on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a video that highlighted the concerns of a guest staying on the first floor of the Radisson Blu hotel. The guest, despite being inside a room with closed windows, could still hear loud music emanating from Ile Iyan, which is located directly opposite the hotel at 29 Isaac John Street.

Residents and business owners had long complained about the restaurant’s excessive noise, which continued well into the night, disturbing the otherwise peaceful neighborhood. In his post, Wahab explained that the closure followed complaints from both residents and neighbors, as well as the “seeming recalcitrant behavior” of the restaurant’s operators. The restaurant was sealed off for violating noise regulations and other environmental standards.

Wahab also reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining order, warning that the administration would not tolerate “anyhowness and lawlessness,” regardless of who was involved. The enforcement of these actions is in line with regulations set by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), which stipulates that noise levels in residential areas should not exceed 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night.

This move underscores the government’s ongoing effort to ensure a quieter and more serene living environment for Lagos residents, maintaining a balance between business operations and community well-being.
