In line with its mandate to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement, TRACE, Ijoko Unit Command, organised a one day 'ember months' Road Safety Awareness Campaign on Wednesday 20, November in Ijoko town and environs to sensitise, educate and enlighten motorists, drivers and other road users on the need for compliance to road safety regulations and laws, as Yuletide beckons.
The campaign, tagged; 'Make Sango-Ijoko road accident free' attracted virtually every stakeholder involved with road Transportation in the axis to brainstorm solutions against crashes, traffic bedlam and reckless attitude of drivers on roads in the axis.
According to Cdr. Temitope Oseni, Unit Commander, TRACE, Ijoko, 'the exercise was in adherence to the TRACE Commander General/Chief Executive Officer, Dr Abdulfatai Olaseni Ogunyemi’s directives to observe the ember months sensitization campaign to reduce Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) during the end-of-year travels."
In her opening address, Oseni said, "the exercise was aimed at sensitising drivers on the importance of obeying traffic rules and regulations while behind the wheels.'
She stressed that, Dr Ogunyemi has directed Divisional/Unit Commanding Officers to ensure the immediate commencement of Public Enlightenment and sensitization campaigns to commuters within the state for smooth traffic flow.
Cdr Oseni, reaffirmed the Agency’s stand to continue having zero tolerance for excessive speed, overloading, recklessness, wrongful overtaking, drunk-driving, one-way drive, riding motorcycle without helmet, road obstructions either by traders or motorists, adding that the agency would intensify much on enforcement to ensure reduction of road crashes.
Speaking at the event, Ogun West Area Commander, Cdr Adekunle Ajibade, said, "TRACE was established with the mandate of ensuring reduction of road traffic crashes in the state."
He pointed out that the TCC/CEO has introduced new strategies to stem the high volume of RTC and to erase the wrong perception that Ogun is the 'mortuary state', by the execution of rigorous sensitisation campaigns in motor Parks, religious homes, schools, markets, town halls, among others with full enforcement, stressing that the commanding officers had been directed to implement it with immediate effect.
CDR. Ajibade sought the collaboration of all transport stakeholders in curbing drivers’ excesses leading to road traffic crashes, RTC, adding that whoever caught flouting traffic rules would be made to face the wrath of law.
In attendance were: Representative of VIO, Police, transport Unions, Company leaders, and Commercial drivers.
